Inés López Carrasco ’Aporia’s Instruction Manual’ (research)

maa 03/10/2011 > vri 14/10/2011

Aporia \uh-PAWR-ee-uh\means placing a claim in doubt by developing arguments on both sides of an issue. It is also the expression of a simulated or real doubt, as about where to begin, or what to do, or say.
This research begins by following the instructions of a ’phrase book’. One of those books created to help you to learn a language for everyday use. Where sentences have been grouped according to situations in which they are typically used (greetings, apologizing, offering help, birthday...).
The use of a basic code of language for daily situations is a way to examine the relationship between subjects, the means and the perspectives of a delivered message. To examine the question of succeeding or failing to communicate what actually needs or wants to be said. Ideally, meaning is delivered through language, while practically, understanding is not guaranteed. Aporia creates a structure wherein meanings and intentions are being continuously exposed, overlooked or hidden like in language and in performing as processes of social interaction.
’What am I to do, what shall I do, what should I do, in my situation, how to proceed? By aporia pure and simple? Or by affirmations and negations invalidated as uttered, or sooner or later? Generally speaking. There must be other shifts. Otherwise it would be quite hopeless. But it is quite hopeless. I should mention before going any further, any further on, that I say aporia without knowing what it means.’
