What images are created by people who gather weekly in the prison of Saint-Gilles? And
how do you present those images outside the prison?
Last autumn, Charlotte Boddaert and Maxime Savoldi started drawing and writing
workshops in the prison of Saint-Gilles. The prison was scheduled to close in 2022 but
remained open due to overcrowding.
The weekly workshop became a place of encounter; drawing and writing became the
language spoken. Exhaustion, lack of food and social support, fear, longing, boredom,
depression, decompression, and humor. Each work testifies to the conditions inside the
prison. The workshops concluded in June with an in situ exhibition.
At GC Pianofabriek, you can see a representation of the process and how Charlotte and
Maxime were involved as outsiders. They continued working with the drawings and texts.
By showing a combination of adaptations and originals, they aim to make the closed-off
world of Saint-Gilles’ detainees tangible.
