Café Tango, every fourth Saturday of the month from 5.30pm to 10.30pm.
Argentine tango is a couples dance, a social dance, an improvisational dance, a sensual and complex dance with rules and codes, which is danced embracing. The first rule is to walk counter-clockwise around the dance floor. The Milonga is both the name of a style of music and the place of dancing, the ball, on a dance floor surrounded by tables.
Traditionally, in Buenos Aires and in many milongas, the invitation to dance is made according to conventional signs, the mirada and the cabeceo (exchanges of consent, eliciting a controlled invitation).
The evening is divided into pandas: series of four pieces by the same author, or in the same style. The pandas are separated by Cortinas, a musical sequence in which the dancers accompany their partners back to their seats. This is often the signal to switch partners.
In tango, social class, age or the language spoken do not count. What matters most is the present, the here and now, in this improvised dance for two.
