’The Ballet of Sam Hogue and Augustus Benjamin’

maa 21/02/2011 > don 03/03/2011

The Ballet of Sam Hogue and Augustus Benjamin is an ongoing artistic project that creates non-referential movement systems between performers in the form of kinetic, ritual practices. The movements performed are not of a representational nature; they are a real attempt at communicating using the medium of the body. Through engaging in these systems of physical communication the performers develop kinetic dialogues.

The potential of these systems is explored through video and site-specific work, improvised performance sessions and stage work. During our residency at Pianofabriek we will be preparating the stage work in which we will experiment with contextualizing the non-mimetic systems of movement via the introduction of external representational elements such as costumes, voice over, subtitles, etc.

In a highly codified and symbolic society, what does it mean to attempt to communicate in a kinetic way, instead of using referential and representational language?
