Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere - Pleasant Island

don 20/12/2018 > zon 06/01/2019

In the Pacific Ocean lies the small island state of Nauru, once known as ’Pleasant Island’ by British whalers. The history of the island can be read as a parable of modern times. After the discovery of large phosphate supply, the island knew growth and wealth. Every piece of land, every garden, every corner of the island was forked over… until all the natural wealth gone.
In their second performance, Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere visit this stripped place, dug empty of its raw materials. The island is now one of the poorest places in the world and hosts refugees from Australia against a high compensation in order to survive. What future will be left after such an ecological and economic bankruptcy?
With ’Pleasant Island’ the two theater makers travelled to Nauru, which recently celebrated fifty years of independence. They hereby continue their research into the consequences of extreme mining through documentary material and field interviews and conversations.
