Hans Beckers - Klopotec Orkestra

maa 23/11/2015 > din 15/12/2015

A Klopotec is an old wooden windmill that normally is used as a bird-scarer in the vineyards of the traditional wine-growing landscapes of Slovenia. A folk belief also states that Klopotecs drive snakes from the vineyards and soften grapes. In Catholic folk music of its region of origin it is sometimes used as a rural church instrument. The Klopotec already appeared in the regions of Haloze and in Zagorje in Slovenia in the 16th century, but nothing particular is known about its origin. A klopotec consists of different wooden parts, each of which should (ideally) be made of a specific type of wood to produce a find and melodic sound.

With the Klopotec, it’s Hans’ aim to create a sound installation for both indoors and outdoors. The Klopotecs will be tuned and played rhythmically, melodically and harmonically. During his residency at Kunstenwerkplaats Pianofabriek, Hans will explore to automatize the Klopotec, which will be driven by motors and electronics instead of wind.
