“Being fascinated by the relation between music and visual art and not wanting to choose between them, Hallveig Agustsdottir turned to soundscapes in her most recent drawings. She started a quest for an accurate way of depicting music, sounds, noise. Yet this sound-based approach turns out to be a starting point for exploring texture and material. By restricting herself to an artist’s basic materials (paper, charcoal and white acrylics) she seems to discover freedom within this strict limitation.” (M. Bouchez)

Interacting with music, sounds and noises in her visual arts, Hallveig has explored a range of different mediums; from painting to photography to performance, video works, as well as creating her own musical compositions. Hallveig’s work over the last two years has focused mainly on drawing; in particular on the movements, gestures and the sounds an artist makes while in the process of creating a drawing.

During her residency at the Pianofabriek, Hallveig will be working on a new composition for her solo performance project, using a sound-drawing instrument that the Belgian composer Paul Craenen and herself have been developing during the past two years. 

Thanks to digital technological possibilities audiovisual artworks and performances of today are capable of creating experiences where sound and image can be linked, often through the use of the same signals – just as a sound becomes a visual image, an image becomes an audible sound experience. 

By amplifying the drawing action with the use of contact microphone(s), and connecting it together with a live video projection Hallveig look for ways to portray both the individual and collaborative aspects of sound and image.
